Crusaders for a Pristine Animal World

Vaccinations/Shots: Should we or shouldn’t we?

I’m not a medical professional. Please consult one if in doubt of any of the information you may read here and what is best for you and your animals.

  • Evaluate the true risk of exposure and get informed
  • Vaccine TITERS are an option – RESEARCH!
  • Assess RISK vs. BENEFIT
  • Always be an educated guardian
  • Don’t vaccinate an unhealthy animal; this includes ear and skin infections
  • Vaccine reactions can be fatal or over-stimulate the immune system to manifest allergies, immune-mediated conditions and even cancer

When it comes down to it depends on your fear level and the risk in your area of certain diseases. Some client’s fear is too great and they feel better vaccinating, some choose only to do the initial vaccinations and stop. If you have any doubts and think you might have regrets if your animal came down with a disease and you would blame yourself for not vaccinating, then just do your homework and get educated.  Talk to your veterinarian and other pet owners, trust your guidance and move forward in the direction that you think is best for your pet. GET EDUCATED!  Check out the links here or on our Resources page!

Vaccination Information & Resources

The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust will determine the duration of immunity conveyed by rabies vaccines. The goal is to extend the required interval for rabies boosters to 5 and then to 7 years. This project depends primarily upon grassroots gifts for funding the costs of conducting the requisite vaccine trials. Our contributions to date have come mostly from kennel clubs and private individuals. The Rabies Challenge Fund Charitable Trust is a federally registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization [Fed. EIN # 84-6390682].

Essential Fundraising Efforts Continue ...

The research began in November 2007 under the direction of Dr. Ronald Schultz and The University of Wisconsin Foundation and is now in year three. We have raised the required funds needed for the first three years of the study and we now seek donations to fund year four. Continuing to raise the funds is essential so the project can continue.

With Your Help...

The Rabies Challenge Fund needs to raise a total of $1.25 million to complete the 5 and 7 year challenge studies. With your help for year four, we are another year closer to making this goal a reality!

Pesticides/Flea & Tick Treatments

Recent EPA Report Findings: March 2010 Recently the EPA has increased its restrictions on topical flea and tick products because they have documented a SIGNIFICANT INCREASE in the number of cats and dogs suffering from adverse reactions to these products. The most common reactions were:

  1. dermal
  2. gastrointestinal
  3. neurological
  4. death (1,600 documented in the last five years)
DON’T FORGET – OUR ANIMALS ARE THE TEST SUBJECTS!

Many flea collars, powders, and sprays still contain highly toxic organophosphate insecticides, "OP's," and/or carbamates. The adverse, sometimes fatal, reactions pets can have to these products is bad enough but humans exposed to these chemicals are also in danger. People who work with animals (groomers, shelter workers) are at high risk for related health problems. Children who spend time with pets that have been treated with these flea products are also at great short-term and long-term risk.

According to the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC), children exposed to the organophosphate insecticides found in many OTC flea products can suffer from long term neurological damage and other diseases.

Cats are particularly susceptible to harmful chemicals in flea products. Permethrin, a common ingredient in flea products and other insecticides and acaricides, is a neurotoxin that is highly toxic for cats and should never be used on them or around them. Cats lack enzymes required to mitigate the effects of many substances.

In mixed pet households, dogs should be treated with a flea product that is safe for the cat as well. Even second-hand exposure to permethrin can cause permethrin toxicosis in cats. Signs of permethrin toxicosis include tremors, seizures, lameness, excitability, lethargy and/or vomiting; toxicosis can result in death. Any animal exhibiting signs of poisoning should be treated by a veterinarian immediately.

The NRDC website gives a very good analysis of chemicals and products to steer clear of. The following pesticides are listed on the site and should be avoided whether your pet is a cat or dog:  chlorpyrifos, dichlorvos, phosmet, naled, tetrachlorvinphos, diazinon, or malathion. If the ingredient list includes carbaryl or propoxur, the product contains a carbamate."

Proven Natural Ways & Products to Prevent a Flea Infestation

Natural ways to prevent/deal with and treat a flea infestation are available upon request and can be determined and individually customized on a case by case basis. This will include C4PAW products and application upon request. A personal consultation can determine the best course of action and what natural products and changes in the home environment can work in harmony with your pet/your household, your belief system and your life.

Remember: education is always the best course of action!

Environment/Energy: Make sure it is a healthy, happy, cohesive environment.  Animals pick up on everything and stress can lead to compromised immune systems and highly stressed and unhappy animals.  No matter what transpires, no matter what happens we need to feel good, especially around our pets.  Animals are tuned into our vibrations sometimes more than we are.  Their health might at times reflect how we are feeling.  The more domesticated the animal, the more they become like us. Many of them come into our lives to show us something we could never have learnt without them so it is our job to provide them with the best platform possible in order to do so.  It seems at times that they require little from us but at times it can seem like a lot because of our fast-paced lives.  So stop, listen, talk to them, hug and pet them, assure them.  Remember the last time they were too busy to pay attention to us.  No. You can’t, can you?

Natural Products: Bathe with a natural shampoo, use essential oils and bach flower remedies.  Essential oils made especially for protection can be sprayed on the animals after their bath and they can be sprayed with it anytime they are going into an area that might cause concern.  It just takes a few minutes to remember to do it!

Critter Oil, Flea Free Essence & Shampoo:  http://www.naturespet.com/flea.html

Carpets & Furniture Treatment: The most efficient way to attack those pesky critters in our carpet is to vacuum on a regular basis.  Being aware and proactive in this regard can save you time, money and energy.  Empty the bag directly after each use or empty the receptor.  Then after you vacuum throw some borax powder and salt down on the carpet and sweep it into the fibers and leave for a few days; should be good as new. Also see C4PAW’s Product Page!

I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers.
